MacKimmie Tower is one of the most significant construction projects in Canada and University of Calgary's first net zero carbon building. The MacKimmie Tower & Block will be home to more than 1,000 faculty and staff when fully developed and will be one of the most energy efficient buildings on a Canadian post-secondary campus. Two additional floors were added to the original MacKimmie Tower which now stands at 15-storeys. The remaining “bones” of the building of the 50 year old structure was largely kept there by significantly reducing the amount of construction waste and re-purposing the concrete superstructure. MacKimmie Tower incorporates a double-skin façade system which responds to changing weather to effectively use and store solar energy.
